User names

Page 1 of 2Next

Hi

When setting up the Asgaros forum plugin, the usernames seem to have been taken from the users already registered to use the (WordPress) website.  Each user has their first name, last name, username and other information recorded in WordPress.  The users enter their username and password to access the members’ area of the website and now the Asgaros forum.

When a user makes a post in the Asgaros forum, the entry shows their username.  Is there a way to change this to show either their first and last names or even a nickname?

Thanks

Hello @davo

Every user can define in his WordPress how his username should be displayed to the public. The option is called “Display name publicly as”. This is the way on how it should be handled to ensure data-privacy for users.

Thanks Asgaros

I now see that because the names were entered by Admin, the users did not get a choice of display name however it seems fairly easy to add one to, as you say, ensure data privacy.

Your forum plugin was installed a couple of days ago so we’re running through some posts to see that it does what we need.  Excellent results so far!

Ah, I’ve added/changed the ‘Display names publicly as…’ option however there is still the (@name) underneath.  Can this be removed?

Hello @davo

The gray names with an @ in front of it are the unique usernames which are used for the mentioning-functionality. Its not possible to use something like the firstname for it because for example a lot of users could have the name Thomas.

If you dont want to use the mentioning-functionality you can turn it off in the forum-settings. In this case the gray unique username is not shown anymore below the users avatar.

Brilliant! Exactly what I was looking for.

Reminder to self… must read all the documentation  :o)

Hi Thomas,

Our recreational property uses your forum on our website and we like it very much. Thank you for your work on it!

We require our displayed names to include a name as well as Division and Lot # to keep all content “public”. When a member requests a forum login, our office assigns a username based on our criteria. Some members have realized that they can use the “Display Name As” function to make themselves somewhat anonymous. We would like to prevent this.

Is it possible to turn off the “Display Name As” option or could it be an addition to a future build?

Thanks again,

Derek

Hello @derekn

This field is a built-in WordPress option, so I cannot remove it directly. However, you can have a look into the following article which maybe can help you to get rid of it:

We currently have one of the more popular username changing plugins installed and it works very well. However, anytime we need to change a user’s username, it only seems to change their main username, while the older “grey” @username is still seen under their avatar, unchanged. What do you think is causing this issue, and how can that be fixed?

Hello @wolfco

This is actually not the username, but an unique identifier for that specific user which cannot be changed. This unique identifier is used by the mentioning-functionality and ensures, that the same name is not shown for more than one user. If you want to hide this information, then you have to disable the mentioning-functionality.
