I cannot get specific posts/topics/forum/category to work

sorry, but none of the short codes listed below seems to make any difference – I mainly need separation on the Category and/or Forum-level.

How can I show a specific post/topic/forum/category on a page?

You can extend the shortcodes with different parameters to show specific content only. For example: [forum post="POSTID"][forum topic="TOPICID"][forum forum="FORUMID"][forum category="CATEGORYID"] or [forum category="CATEGORYID1,CATEGORYID2"].

THANK YOU.

Hello @acumenist

Can you provide an example of the shortcodes which you have tried? They should work correctly.

hi @asgaros

many thanks for following up.

I did try [forum forum="FORUMID"][forum category="CATEGORYID"] , but please don’t worry about this anymore, because I found the problem and created a work-around.

for what it’s worth, and maybe you can explain it to me to me, here is a description of what I found:

  • I am using the plugin called ‘Booking Calendar’ on the same page as the forum or category should appear
  • if I plug the Booking Calendar short code into the main section on the page, something strange happens (*), and the forum short-code does not work
  • my work-around was to shift the Booking Calendar into a side-bar (can be arranged to look the same as a section), and that magically stops the Booking Calendar interfering with the forum short-code, and m,y problem is solved

(*) I am using an Elementor-theme to edit my WP-page from the front end; I am not sure, if the problem sits at Elementor, or at my host, but when I add new plugins or similar, the website sometimes changes overnight (i.e. during some caching-process by the server!?); I once woke up to see that my landing page had shifted to display the content of a newly entered short-code, because something had caused the entry of that code to be written into the index.html page overnight (the developer of the plugin, whose code was now very prominent on two of my websites was super helpful and told me how to me to edit the cPanel, but he did not have many friendly words for the host’s service personnel for missing something so obvious).

I am a total layman (I am a chemist and technology analyst), but am using some Big Data analysis and statistical tools and can find my way around some code (with a bit of time). And I would really like to have some things explained to me, because it drives me nuts to be so helpless sometimes.

So, if there is an explanation for the phenomenon described above, I would be happy, if you could try me.

And I have a more substantial question, please: is there a way to ‘anchor’ the forum-view in a way that keeps it in view when one send a reply, edits the subscription, or does other things that cause the forum view to reload? the forum view is sitting quite low on a busy page, and my problem is that the user has to scroll back down again for every action in the forum, because a reload of the forum view take the user back to the top of the page.

thank you.

Hello @acumenist

The only possible explanation for me is, that both plugins (forum and shortcode) interact somehow with the pages content and in the link-generation process for its sub-pages so that the logic possibly overwrite each others. But its just a guess because I am not exactly sure how the code of the other extension is working.

For the scrolling-issue I have no solution yet because that requires to add an anchor to every generated link inside of the forum. I will see if I can add an option for it to the link-generation logic.

I am having a similar/same problem. I am using the plug-in WP File Uploader. When I put the shortcode for that plug-in above the shortcode for a specific Forum on a page, it does not work – it shows all Forums. When I put the shortcode under the Forum on the page, it works.

Seems as though it is a bug with Forums.

Hoping for a fix as I want to have something on a page ahead of Forums.
